Brazilian wins the lottery and loses million-dollar prize; understand what happened

After hitting the Mega-Sena numbers, happiness turned into frustration when the million-dollar prize slipped away due to an unexpected setback in the online lottery payment system.

The bettor, who preferred not to be identified, filed a legal appeal in an attempt to claim her prize but ended up losing the legal battle. The credit card operator responsible for the transaction reversed the value of the ticket, preventing the bet from being finalized in the lottery system.

The decision of the Federal Court in Santa Catarina favored Caixa Econômica Federal, which argued that the bet was not completed due to the reversal made by the credit card operator. Judge Sérgio Eduardo Cardoso emphasized that the bank did not receive the value of the bet, making it impossible to pay the prize to the bettor.

The woman, who had purchased an eight-number ticket worth R$ 140 and paid with a credit card, saw her bet not enter the draw due to the incident in the payment system. According to the policies established by Caixa, bets are considered "finalized" only when all transactions are processed and enter the draws.

The judge emphasized the importance of reading and accepting the terms of use of the system, highlighting that it is the user's responsibility to verify the finalization of their bets and which draws they are participating in. Although the judicial decision was unfavorable to the bettor, there is still the possibility of appeal to the Regional Federal Court of the 4th Region, in Porto Alegre.
