The happiness of winning the lottery turned into an unexpected frustration for Heather Douglas, a Canadian from Ontario. After discovering that she had won a prize of US$ 1,003, Heather couldn't cash the amount because she couldn't remember where she had bought the ticket.
Heather, who travels the country doing volunteer work, has a habit of buying lottery tickets in every city she visits. However, when she tried to claim her prize almost a year after the purchase, she was informed by an employee of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) that she would need to provide details about the place of purchase. Without this information, the prize could not be released.
“There was no notice saying you need to prove where you bought the ticket. I was outraged by the situation,” vented Heather. She was not the only one to go through this. Another man also had his US$ 1,200 prize denied for not remembering the place of purchase.
The OLG explained that, to ensure the prize is delivered to the rightful owner, it is necessary to verify the legitimacy of the ticket, especially for prizes of US$ 1,000 or more. Part of the process includes answering questions like “where did you buy the ticket?” and “when did you buy the ticket?”.
Fortunately, Heather's story had a happy ending. After further review, the OLG recognized the authenticity of the ticket, and Heather finally received her prize of US$ 1,003.
